How To Steam Oysters
Oysters are very easy to cook using a seafood steamer. To steam oysters or other shellfish, add about 2-3 cups of water or beer in a seafood steamer (the fluid level should be about an inch deep).
Boil on high heat about 5 minutes or until the steam rolls out when the lid is opened slightly.
Add oysters and cover, cooking with medium heat. Continue steaming oysters about 5-10 minutes, or until the majority of the oysters are open.
For best results, do not overcook oysters. Serve hot with melted butter, vinegar and crackers.
This same cooking method also works well for small quahog clams, soft-shelled clams, blue mussels and other fresh shellfish.
For cooks that need to buy seafood or vegetable steamers online, several examples of steamers are shown that are suitable for steaming oysters or other shellfish.
